In a somewhat surprising twist when Virgil Abloh first unveiled his original collection with Louis Vuitton one of the standout pieces was a bag. Virgil who had mostly been known for his clothing design and shoes was not expected to make a big splash with a new bag, especially with a brand like Louis Vuitton that is known for their leather goods. Louis Vuitton has been a very traditional fashion house when it comes to bags sticking with their mostly brown color palette. These bags are classic and timeless and will never go out of style. However, when Virgil arrived he decided to put his own spin on things
. For the spring summer 2019 collection Virgil UN failed a very unique bag. The bag was featured in an iridescent version while still keeping the shape of Louis Vuitton classic Keepall bag. This quickly became one of the hottest accessories to release that season. The Virgil was able to make holographic and reflective materials become trendy at a time when clothes were bought with an emphasis on being photographed and used on Instagram. These are very shiny and bold and different and it’s something that a lot of influencers flocked towards.
There were a number of pieces in that collection that used the iridescent or rainbow reflective type color scheme. In the show notes Virgil included a list of words that he had his own definition for one of those was rainbow, which
he described as a “kaleidoscopic palette evolving from off white to polychromatic synchronously forming a holographic archway known to represent a dream”. I think this conveyed his wanting to use this as a way to say that these bags can be any color and not just the traditional standard. After his show there were a number of other fashion houses and brands that began to use these holographic and reflective materials in their shows. The most notable was Stone Island who’s creative director posted himself in a reflective trench coat paying homage to Virgil’s design before his own show.
