Virgil Abloh was born in Chicago in 1980. His parents were Ghanaian immigrants and he attended a Catholic school. His love for fashion may have started with his mother who was a seamstress who also taught the tricks of the trade.
In 2002 he completed his undergraduate degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin. On the day of his graduation it said that he skipped out on his final critique in order to take a meeting with Kanye West manager, and soon after him and West started working together
Kanye and Virgil first started working together as interns at the fashion House of Fendi in Rome in 2009. In 2010 Abloh becomes the creative director for Donda, Kanye’s creative agency.
In 2011 Virgil Abloh earns a Grammy nomination for being the art director for the album watch the throne by Kanye West and Jay-Z. This was one of his first ventures into the music industry and he later designed many other amazing album covers.
In 2012 Virgil launched his first fashion brand Pyrex vision. He purchased Ralph Lauren flannel shirts for $40 each and screen printed his company name and The number 23 on them. 23 was an homage to Michael Jordan as he was a childhood hero of Virgil growing up in Chicago.
Pyrex vision was more of an experiment for Virgil to see if his design ideas it could work in a more right widespread format. With the success of the brand it showed that he could be successful with that new style, so in 2013 he shut down Pyrex vision and sounded off white
. Off white was founded under the idea of being a multiplatform creative endeavor based in Milan fashion was the main medium but there were other aspects as well. With his off white brand he combines the idea of St wear luxury art music and travel defining the brand simply as the Gray area between black and white as the color off white.
